Athelstan has been watching Ragnar all night, waiting for a chance to get him alone before he leaves.

They need to talk.

Finally, he spots Ragnar heading into the woods towards the river, and - by a different route, so no one will think twice about it - follows.

Athelstan nods and turns towards the shadow, facing into the tree as if he was answering a call of nature.

Ragnar goes to the river and washes his hand and face in the cold water, then turns around and doubles back the long way, and after about five minutes, he turns up in the shadow beside Athelstan, hardly more than a rustle in the leaves and a brief flash of a grin.

He hopes, very much, that the shadow is deep enough to conceal them. But Ragnar thinks it is, and that's good enough.

He takes a step towards Ragnar's open arms.

Ragnar wraps his arms around him and hugs him, hard. He leans his face against Athelstan's hair and keeps very still.

Athelstan turns his face up towards Ragnar's, moving slowly and as little as possible.

Ragnar leans in just as slowly, and claims his kiss -- deep and loving and slow.

And, most importantly, quiet. Athelstan doesn't make a sound as he kisses Ragnar back.

"I love you so much," Ragnar whispers against Athelstan's lips.

"We'll meet again soon", he promises. "As soon as you've dealt with him, you'll come back?"

"I will!" Ragnar promises. "I will always come back for you, Athelstan!"

"Bring farmers", he says with a slight smile. "Perhaps by then we'll have made progress."

"I will," Ragnar says, gently leaning in for one more kiss, "because in the end, we will get there."

"We will." He returns the kiss, then pulls back. "What time are you leaving?"

"Early morning," Ragnar says. "With the tide, which turns near dawn."

"I'll be there", he says quietly.

Just one more kiss!

"Thank you," Ragnar says, against Athelstan's lips.

"You never need to thank me." He leans up for a firmer kiss for a moment. "Not for anything."

"But I want to!" Ragnar declares, returning the kiss -- because how can he not?

"Then you're welcome."

"And now," Ragnar says, regretfully, "we should be on our way."

He nods, squeezing Ragnar's hand once more.

"We'll meet again soon."

Ragnar squeezes back, then lets go.

"Soon," he just says, and then slips away into the shadows of the bushes.

Somebody has to, or they'd still be here when the dawn comes and the tide turns.
