For Sinric
Athelstan's room is almost pathologically neat, the bed made and everything in its place.
He stands aside to let Sinric in, the bathroom door standing open to reveal the huge sunken bath inside.

Still holding him as close when Sinric slips out, he then adds, in the same intimate tone, "That is Sinric the wanderer you found, a young Sinric about thirty years in the past, twenty before I am going to have met him in a tavern while away trading, where I would listen to his tales of rich lands in the west before giving in to my curiosity and bedding him. I know how to get that sweet little snail to raise its head from its shell in curiosity because he taught me! And when we parted, he gave me the sun-board and the sunstone."
Pause.
"Without him, I would not have come to England; without him, I would never have found you so I could love you; without him, neither of us would be who he is. We owe him, and the fate that threw him in our path, for everything we are and have. That is who he is."

Athelstan's eyes widen, and he turns to look towards the door Sinric vanished through.
"Fate indeed, that he came here and I met him. I hope we can repay him, either now or then."
no subject
Pause.
"I have met him today as well, and realised who he was; he is very striking and unique, even with twenty years in-between. But I would not..."
Beat.
"A small sweet Saxon is much more easy to trust, and open up to, for one as downcast as he is still. We are the ones to set him on the path to the pride and self-assurance so he will wander the world and set us on our path!"

"What can we do for him?" Athelstan asks. "To make sure he can leave Constantinople? When his emperor dies, he'll be in the gravest danger."

"Then let's hope his door presents itself many times before Constantine dies", Athelstan says quietly. "And perhaps get something for him that he could use to escape, something small he can conceal."
no subject
Pause.
"But being kind to him and pleasing him in all possible ways, and encouraging to think more of himself, that's harder and will take longer, but is far more important. But I would say it is nothing if not a labour of love."
no subject
"Most certainly", Athelstan agrees. "I hope we may have plenty of time to work on it."
no subject
For all he can tell, Sinric may be dead.
no subject
"Do you have any idea where he might be, in our time and place?"
no subject

"Perhaps you should put out word", Athelstan suggests lightly. "At least to know if he's alive and well."

He nods.
"It would be good to know. But we can take care of him now."
no subject
Pause.
"Always making sure that is what he wants, too. He's far too used to bending to men's wills, so even more than care he needs the space to unbend."
no subject
"That will take time, I think. He's so unused to anyone taking time over him."
no subject
no subject
"But being careful not to overwhelm him to the point he runs away."

Athelstan nods.
"And perhaps even if we have to go back, he won't. It puts him in no danger of being missed to stay here, and there's so much to stay for."
no subject
no subject
"That would be good. A place of his own, I shouldn't think he's ever had that in his life."

Athelstan nods.
"Privacy and security, and if it's too much, he can come through to us."
