Athelstan has got used to snatching a few hours of restless sleep most nights, and going back to the work room as soon as he wakes. He very rarely sleeps in Milliways, unless Sinric is there.

This night is unusual, not least because he has fallen asleep alone in their room upstairs - and the dream is different too.

"She'll be glad to know that we are well in the afterlife," Leif says. "And you'll have a friend in her. Even when you wonder and worry about things you don't want anybody else to know."

"...thank you, my friend", Athelstan answers softly. "I feel I will need that very much."

"Even the thing with Ragnar," Leif says, smiling. "But I'd better go. Don't forget -- don't worry so much! The gods will take care of you. The know what they need you for."

"And when that is done", he says, "there will be Ragnar. Goodbye, Leif."

"There will be Ragnar," Leif agrees. "I should drop in on him later."

He steps sideways, into the rushes; there is a rustle, and if Athelstan looks again, he'll be gone.
