Athelstan has got used to snatching a few hours of restless sleep most nights, and going back to the work room as soon as he wakes. He very rarely sleeps in Milliways, unless Sinric is there.

This night is unusual, not least because he has fallen asleep alone in their room upstairs - and the dream is different too.

"She can be as proud of us as she was when we were alive," Leif says, sounding softer for the first time.

Athelstan reaches over and touches his arm.

"She has never stopped."

Leif smiles down at him, warmly.

"Will you do me a favour?" he says.

[athelstanthescribe]

"I doubt you would ask anything I'd refuse. Name it."

"Just a little thing," Leif says. "When you get home, go see her and tell her you dreamed of me, and we love her. And if you happen to find some little ornament for her to wear in the shape of a leaping hare, a brooch or fibula or pendant or perhaps a trinket to put up at home, bring her that. Then she'll know your dream was true."

Athelstan smiles.

"Gladly, my friend. I'll even have one made - but what does the hare mean?"

"A running joke in our family that's likely older than myself," Leif says, "but she used to say I was wild like a young hare in spring, when I was a child, and my father always laughed with approval. They loved each other fiercely to the last day."

When Earl Haraldsson's men had cowardly murdered Erik.

"I saw her joy when your father returned", he says with a quiet nod. "And her grief when he died."

"She'll be glad to know that we are well in the afterlife," Leif says. "And you'll have a friend in her. Even when you wonder and worry about things you don't want anybody else to know."

[athelstanthescribe]

"...thank you, my friend", Athelstan answers softly. "I feel I will need that very much."

"Even the thing with Ragnar," Leif says, smiling. "But I'd better go. Don't forget -- don't worry so much! The gods will take care of you. The know what they need you for."

[athelstanthescribe]

"And when that is done", he says, "there will be Ragnar. Goodbye, Leif."

"There will be Ragnar," Leif agrees. "I should drop in on him later."

He steps sideways, into the rushes; there is a rustle, and if Athelstan looks again, he'll be gone.
